Overview

The plant list is where most landscapes quietly go wrong.

A bed looks great the week it goes in. Three years later half of it is oversized, a quarter of it is dead, and the rest is fighting for light. That is almost never bad luck — it is a plant list chosen for install-day appearance instead of mature size and site conditions.

We design plantings for what the bed looks like in year five, and we are honest with you about which plants will need dividing, replacing, or cutting back to stay in scale.

Planting and Design
What’s included

Scope, written out.

Every line below appears on your proposal, so you can hold it against anyone else’s bid.

  • Site assessment: sun, shade, wind, and moisture by zone
  • Soil evaluation and amendment plan
  • Scaled planting plan with species, quantities, and install sizes
  • Mature-size spacing so beds fill in without crowding
  • Four-season interest — bloom, foliage, bark, and winter structure
  • Minnesota-hardy selection for our zone
  • Native and pollinator-friendly options where you want them
  • Deer and rabbit pressure factored into selection
  • Foundation, border, screening, and specimen plantings
  • Bed shaping, edging, and mulch
  • Tree and shrub installation with proper depth and staking
  • First-season care instructions and a check-in visit
How we build it

The parts you cannot see are the parts that fail.

Designed for year five

We space to mature width even though the bed looks sparse on install day. Beds planted for instant fullness are beds you will be tearing out in four years.

Right plant, right place

Exposure and drainage decide what lives. A hydrangea on a hot west foundation is a plant you will replace twice before you blame the plant.

Deer and rabbits are real

Across much of the metro, browse pressure decides your plant list more than aesthetics do. We will tell you which favorites will get eaten.

Something happening every season

Spring bloom is easy. We plan for late-summer interest, fall color, and winter structure — the months you look out the window most.

What it costs

Nobody in this market will give you a number. Here is what actually moves it.

Every landscape contractor in the Twin Cities refuses to quote before seeing the site, and honestly they are right to — access and grade change a price more than square footage does. What we will do is tell you which decisions drive your number, so you walk into the consultation knowing where the money goes.

  • Bed square footage and how many beds
  • Plant size at install — a #2 shrub and a #10 of the same species are years and dollars apart
  • Tree caliper — the fastest way to move a planting budget
  • Soil condition — new construction lots often need real amendment before anything will thrive
  • Demolition — removing overgrown existing material and roots
  • Edging and mulch — small per foot, meaningful across a whole property

“Of all the companies I called to give me an estimate, Maddi from ProScapes is the ONLY person who followed up with me. She is so conscientious, had great recommendations and took my drawings and turned them into a fabulous reality. Her team was on time, knew exactly what to do and were flexible with my suggestions while on site. They came back a year later to fix a couple of things that didn’t grow back. I recommended them to my neighbors and they too had a very positive experience.”

“They did our front yard landscaping which turned out great. We had perennials planted but some of them never “took off” and were dry this spring. I contacted ProScapes and within a couple weeks, new beautiful plants were re-planted. Thank you!”

“I needed new landscaping after having a new deck put on my house. Sam came out, measured the space, talked to me about what I wanted, and presented me with a design. The team came out and got it all done in one day. I still get neighbors coming by saying the place looks great.”

Our process

Six stages, and you approve before the money moves.

Consultation

A designer walks the property with you, listens to how you actually want to use the space, and flags anything structural — drainage, grade, access — before ideas get expensive.

Site analysis

Soil, sun, drainage, slope, utilities, and existing plant health. This is the stage that separates a design that works from a design that only looks good on paper.

Design

Plan drawings and material selection, with a cost range attached before anyone commits to a full construction set. You see what you’re buying.

Your review

You mark it up. We revise. Nothing gets ordered or scheduled until the plan and the number both have your signature on them.

Installation

Our crews, our equipment. Base photos before anything gets covered, site cleaned to working condition every evening, and a firm end date.

Walkthrough & warranty

We walk the finished work with you, show you how to care for it, and hand over the warranty. Then we’re available for the maintenance if you want it.

Questions

What homeowners ask.

Should I plant natives?
Where it fits the look you want, yes — natives generally handle our extremes with less input and support pollinators. But a fully native design has a specific aesthetic that not everyone wants at the front door. A common compromise is native and pollinator-friendly planting in the back and side beds, with a more traditional palette at the entry.
When is the best time to plant in Minnesota?
Spring and early fall both work well. Fall is often better and less appreciated — soil is still warm, the plant is heading into dormancy, and root establishment happens before the next summer's stress. Fall also books up less.
Why did the plants from my last landscaper die?
In our experience the usual causes, in order: planted too deep, wrong plant for the exposure, poor soil never amended, and irrigation that either drowned or missed them. Rarely is it the plant's fault.
Do you guarantee plant material?
Yes, with terms stated in the proposal, and the warranty assumes the plants get watered. We give you a written first-season watering schedule because the single most common cause of a warranty claim is a new planting that went three August weeks without water.
